Taskforce 362 Story: #2

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 30th of December
Our two wounded Task-Group Members TFC Reagan and OTC Smith are still in shock, we did what we could but their wounds look bad, so far, I was unable to obtain a complete and coherent story. Apparently, they were awoken by a commotion during the night by a loud scream coming from GSC Pawlov who was on watch, as he was attacked by a creature resembling a large dog or a puma that ripped him to shreds before he was able to draw his weapon. Subsequently Reagan and Smith discharged their ACR rifles into the darkness but were unable to get a good look on their attacker nor score a hit, while they were suddenly attacked by a 2nd or possible 3rd creature from behind. Somehow, they managed to repel the attacks and crawled into the driver’s cabin of the tractor, where they were found in the morning, covered in deep lacerations and bite wounds. They are stable but we don’t have the necessary medical equipment on location to deal with this. Setting up a comm-link with regional HQ is our top priority. Unfortunately, the transmitter is on board of Tractor two which is still sitting in the road ditch. While our technical team is continuing to set up the electricity grid and prepare the chosen location for the LRT unit, our construction efforts are already under way. I will now head out to personally inspect the incident site, if there is an unknown predator out there, we have to take action to prevent further incidents. 7 days into the mission and this is already turning into a clusterfuck…

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 30th of December Continuation:
Ahead recovery team encountered looters at our broken tractor. Two men shot on sight one female captured. They appear to be teenagers from a nearby reservation, we are not alone out here after all. While my men had every right to use lethal force to protect corporate assets this will unfortunately complicate matters with the local population. The cargo was not compromised and was successfully recovered. We were however unable to locate the remains of GSC Pawlov, apart from his right arm severed below the elbow still holding his ACR Rifle with a firm grip. This is quite concerning; what creature could rip of an arm like that in a single bite? Perhaps the locals know more about this. The detained female looter is of Aboriginal heritage about 16 years of age and had neither identification or personal documents on her when captured. She is unable or unwilling to communicate with us, speaking only in a local dialect we cannot make heads or tails of. Perhaps a strategy to buy time, a few days of isolation and food deprivation might cure this ailment.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 2nd of January
Basic operations and preliminary construction on sight have been completed. Com-link still not operational. Something is wrong with the damn transmitter, did the looters damage it after all? Have we been sabotaged? The breakdown of tractor 2 was odd enough, well I must not jump to conclusions but this is getting awfully suspicious. The whole sight is now connected to the power grid, I ordered to block the entrance to the valley with barbed wire and tripwire mines, this should keep out whatever attacked my men. But just to be save no one is to go out alone after nightfall and hand arms have been given out to the technical personal as well. Our engineers have completed the construction of the well. The groundwater level in this area is very low according to our geologist. Somewhere between 120 and 130 metres. Well I don’t care the important bit is chemical analysis shows no signs of contamination by Fracfluids. No proppants, solvents, scale inhibitors, biocides or any other associated substances were detected. He did however discover a moderate concentration of lead 0,15 mg/l. This could indicate that this place used to be a lead mine. Either way our water filters will take care of that. Based on this information the ground water is deemed save and drinkable. A great relief, our current supplies of water would have lasted for another three weeks at the most. Temperatures are relentless and we expect worse in the coming weeks. On further note OTC Smith succumbed to his wounds last night. TFC Reagan is still holding on, the medics give her a 50/50 chance. I’ll have to come up with something, I’ll be damned if that ruins my performance evaluation.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 5th of January
After several days of tinkering the LRT-Unit has been restored to partial working order. Something has damaged the circuits, but despite my suspicions this does not look like sabotage or even faulty components. I’m no technician but the engineers describe it as if the PCB was exposed to some kind of radiation. Many of the circuits and components where shorted or dead. However, there is no indication of an induced over voltage or corrosion. Extensive replacement and bypassing of circuits was necessary, this however severely hampers the systems abilities as well as it’s stability. So far, we are unable to receive communications, but will now make an attempt to send out a message.

We have transmitted our status reports for several days now, no reply or confirmation received. Construction on site continues, we have finally accessed the derelict mine shaft after removing an estimated 50 metric tons of rocks from the entry section. The old caterpillar came in handy which was remarkably easy to fix despite the decades of inactivity. The shaft is circular in shape and measures 5 metres in diameter. It heads straight into the mountain, solid sandstone, no inclusions or fault lines that could affect it to speak of. This is almost perfect for our purposes. We might even be able to move our accommodations into the shaft. After all we are experiencing a heat wave; five IDs have collapsed due to heatstroke and as we are already behind schedule, I have made the decision to draft the local population that is if we can locate them and secure their cooperation.

I have almost given up on the LCT but it seems our message finally got through. A Skylord appeared and dropped the first load of construction materials, 120 tons in total. We did however not receive a replacement transceiver as requested. Never then less I have ordered triple shifts to make up for the lost time. The quicker we get this tunnel sealed and climatized the better for everyone involved.

It’s been two weeks since the incident evolving around tractor 2, we still have no clue of the whereabouts of the reservation or the predator. We did however finally make headway with our “guest”. One of the IDs smuggled in some food and was able to communicate with the detained, although I will have to punish him for the act, we finally have an idea where they are situated. I’m confident that we can leave past behind and acquire additional personal for the task at hand. The heat is decimating my crew 3 engineers are sick our German IDs, seem to be particularly affected by the heat another ten are incapacitated, choking, vomiting, feverish and covered in rash. At the very least it can be ascertained they are not faking.

A scouting party has finally confirmed the location of the reservation, they are well hidden in the bush land, with no apparent road access completely off grid. No wonder we couldn’t locate them. I will pay them a visit and personally taking the girl with us.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 17th of January Part 2
Things did not go as planned. Upon reaching the hamlet we were unable to locate the inhabitants, they apparently left or so we thought. In fact, it was a trap. Upon entering what seemed to be the local grocery GSC Rudy was struck by a large caliber rifle of unknown origin, ripping straight through his dragon scale vest killing him instantly. In the insuring firefight the culprit, an old man probably in his 70s was neutralized. While everyone was distracted GTC Simpson who was accompanying our detainee was hit by a stick on his head, knocking him unconscious. We were unable to locate the 2nd subsequent attacker or the girl. A full sweep of the village was conducted however no residents or any clue to their whereabouts was obtained. As we lack manpower and time for a widespread search, I ordered the weapon, all useful material and equipment to be confiscated, the village to be burned, as well as any means of transportation to be destroyed. Wherever there is a link between the villagers, the beast attacks or sino-terroism is unclear.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 30th of January
It’s been two weeks since the incident in the hamlet, and still no sign of the locals. The guards have orders to shoot on sight, I will not take any second chances. Construction on the Burh is progressing despite having at least 20 people classified as unfit for duty by now. Treatment options are limited. Without outside help we might end all end up like that. The conditions affect men and material more than to be expected. The LCT unit has failed repeatedly and it is unclear if we can fix it on sight. While we are currently unable to communicate with the outside world, we continue to receive additional materials as scheduled.
