Taskforce 362 Story: #3

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 8th of March
I have not been well these past days. Pounding headache, nausea and a nasty rash all over my chest. About 60 of us are showing similar symptoms to varying degrees. Three IDs attempted to desert last night, they were however spotted by our guards and shot after they did not respond to their calls. Or probably the other way around.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 16th of March
Phase one of construction has been completed. Despite the hardships and lack of communication things have progressed above my expectations. Some of us have recovered some others however have not. My Task Group is down to 36 Men and Women who are considered fit, 22 with restrictions and 18 more unfit for duty. Twenty-four dead or missing. I can’t shake the feeling that we are being watched, something beyond our grasp is going on, we need to stay sharp and push on. If HQ follows the schedule the station crew should arrive in just a few weeks. Then I will request an immediate relief for the entire Task Group. Presented with the facts surely the Headmaster will approve.

During the expansion of the 2nd level we have broken through to a previous unknown tunnel section. It is filled with hundreds of barrels that contain vast quantities of dry fine-grained grey mud. All of them are labelled radioactive. We immediately sealed of the compartment and began decontamination procedures on all personal. With a little luck we were able to, my god this was not a mine, but an off record nuclear waste disposal site…

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 4th of April Addendum:
I have consulted with our geologist the pictures taken from the barrels and the substance within them point towards a substance called tailings, a by-product of uranium processing. This by-product depending on the site contains substantial quantities of Radium-226, Radon-222 and Lead-210, all of which are radioactive. We are not equipped to test for all these substances let alone have a Geiger counter to determine the potential danger from this discovery but given the symptoms of many of us have, we may be affected by various degrees of radiation sickness, induced by a contaminated water source. Repairing the LRT unit is now essential, and if we have to strip all our equipment for spare parts I do not care. I rather spend 10 years in a penal colony on New Guinea than staying here any longer.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 5th of April:
After a full assessment of the situation we opted to stay on location for the time being. If we fix the LCT an evac-team can be on location within hours, days at most. If we opt to take our chances in the desert, our predictions show that we will run out of fuel well before we get out of the desert. Construction on site is halted all personal confined to quarters except for the tech crew who is working around the clock stripping our hardware for spare parts.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 6th of April:
Last night the IDs have broken out and overwhelmed their guards. They stole tractor one and broke through our outer perimeter. The fuel tank on Tractor 3 has been perforated as well as our main reserve tank opened. Several ACRs are missing three guards injured. They must have had outside help. We are unable to pursue them, we are stretched thin as is and I definitely want to avoid further run ins with the locals or that predator.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 9th of April:
We are under attack, all personal withdraw to the Burh! *Send Message?* *Confirm*

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 10th of April:
On the morning of April, the 9th we came under attack by the deserters with aid from local terrorists. It seems they planned this all along, they bypassed our minefield and had snipers positioned on the hillside. Our guards were taken out one by one. All remaining personal withdrew to the Burh. Anyone who could not run was left behind. With me in the bunker I have 13 survivors, all that’s left of Task Group 362. Anyone outside is to be considered dead. Sealed behind the armored door we are save for now, although cut off from the well we won’t last long. Our technicians are still working on the transmitter via the remote control, if it was not damaged or destroyed during the fighting, we still have a chance.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 11th of April:
All is quiet outside. Perhaps they are gone, perhaps they are waiting for us to come out, we have to come out at some point, soon. Quite ironic we might die through lead induced poisoning or lead induced wounds.

Personal Log Burke, R. 0460205 XO Task group 362 11th of April Part 2:
Finally, the LCT unit is responding, something has triggered a back up system even our techs did not know about. It is receiving a Morse coded message: – …. .. … / .. … / .- / .–. .-. .. — .-. .. – -.– / — -. . / .- .-.. . .-. – —… / .- .-.. .-.. / ..- -. .. – … / .–. .-. — -.-. . . -.. / – — / -.-. .- — . .-.. — – .-.-.- / — . … … .- –. . / .-. . .–. . .- – … —…

This is a priority one alert: All units proceed to Camelot. Message Repeats.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Whatever it is, it’s not intended for us and it doesn’t sound good. Simpson! Simpson!! You moron did you decode this right? Simpson: Sir, yes Sir! I was first in class in ancient communications. Well aren’t we lucky to be blessed by your presence guard third class Simpson, I will recommend you for a promotion. That is if there is someone left to recommend to. Because if I’m reading this right, we’re fucked.

******Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom******

What the *cough* *cough* what the fuck just happened, report! Someone report! Someone: They blew up the tunnel! We’re trapped!

Burh 19 tunnel entrance

Alright, everybody stays calm, we ain’t dead yet, not until I fucking say so. They just couldn’t wait another day or two for us to come out begging to get shot. Fair enough, I have better things to do anyways. Simpson! Reagan!! Get them on their feet, everybody grab all the gear you can, we head for the communications room. All we have to do is dig the last part of the access tunnel to the hilltop and we get out of here. We have two days, three at the most, so get moving, we are on our own now.
